Rs 160-crore sewerage project launched in Verka |

The long-pending demand of the residents of Verka, a suburban town, has finally been conceded with the state government giving the go-ahead to a Rs. 160-crore sewerage project, including the cost of two treatment plants.
The foundation stone of the project was laid on Thursday by BJP
MLA and chief parliamentary secretary Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu. Verka falls in the Amritsar East constituency that she represents.
Present on the occasion was local MP Navjot Singh Sidhu, and Punjab Sewerage and Water Supply Board chairman Baldev Raj Chawla.

Amritsar, May 17 (PTI) BJP, the alliance partner in Punjab government, today said Amritsar lacks basic amenities and demanded the government to implement integrated master plan for the city on priority basis. In a letter addressed to Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, state BJP executive member Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina said The city of Golden Temple lacks basic amenities including proper sewerage system, uninterrupted water supply, proper traffic system. Countries can be divided but not Manto! Remembering perhaps the most widely-read and the most translated writer in Urdu, Saadat Hasan Manto, whose literary legacy is jointly shared between India and Pakistan, a Punjabi play Ek si Manto (“There was a Manto”) was showcased in Amritsar this past week.
A tribute to the great writer whose birth centenary year (May 11, 1912) is being celebrated in both the countries, especially in Indian Punjab where he was born, the play seeks to convey why Manto wrote what he wrote.

AMRITSAR: Markets in Pakistan and Afghanistan still remain elusive for tea traders of Punjab, because Pakistan doesnt allow import of tea across the Attari border. The neighbouring country is also yet to allow transit to Indian tea-traders for the export green and black tea to Afghanistan, although it allows transit to Afghan traders for exporting dry fruits to India across the Attari border.

Congress today suffered a jolt in the border belt of Amritsar district when 23 panchayats of the Baba Bakala assembly constituency joined the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD).

Pakistan high commission declines visas to Sikh devotees |

AMRITSAR: The Pakistan high commission has refused visas to Sikh devotees aspiring to undertake pilgrimage to gurdwaras of Pakistan to observe the martyrdom day of Guru Arjan Dev.
Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Avtar Singh Makkar told TOI on Wednesday evening that SGPC had submitted passports of 320 devotees to Pakistan high commission for obtaining visas.

AMRITSAR: While Pakistani rights activists have warned to initiate a move against possible capital punishment despite informal moratorium, the international community has also shown grave concern over the scheduled hanging of Pakistani national Behram Khan on May 23rd.

Deserter IAF man escapes from custody, search op on |

An Air Force officer, Wing Commander Shashank Shekhar, has escaped from custody of Air Force Station, Ambala, after being arrested for deserting the force. A search operation has been launched to trace him out.
The wing commander, who was last posted at Air Force Station,
Rajasansi in Amritsar, has been missing from the duty since October 24, 2011. A DDR was got registered in this regard at Police Station Guru Ramdas Ji International Airport, Amritsar.

AMRITSAR: Security was beefed up on the Indian side of Integrated Check Post (ICP) following threats reports to Pakistan portion of ICP by Talibans on Wednesday late evening.

Amritsar: A high priest of Sikhs temporal seat the Akal Takht on Tuesday asked the Sikh community in India and abroad to discuss and deliberate on the new draft of Sikh Anand Marriage Act-2012 meant to frame a separate law for marriages in the community.

23 students hurt as bus overturns |

As many as 23 students and two teachers were injured when a school bus coming from Amritsar Road overturned near Abdal village here on Monday. The bus belonging to a private school, carrying 23 students and two teachers, was on its way to school, when in a bid to save a motorcyclist, the
driver lost control over the vehicle and the bus fell into a ditch and overturned.
The bus belonged to Shri Guru Harkrishan School, Abdal, and was ferrying students from Kathunangal, Wariam, Sehneywali, Alkarey, Chandey and Chavinda Devi villages to the school on Monday morning.

Aman ki Asha attracts Planning Commission to industrialize border areas |

CHANDIGARH: The thaw in the trade relations between India and Pakistan has prompted the Planning Commission of India to set up industrial clusters in border areas of Punjab.
"The Planning Commission has decided to extend the technical and financial support for integrated industrial complexes and for establishment of requisite facilities and infrastructure in the border belt," the commission officially said.
The state Government will only assist with land acquisition and supporting infrastructure, the commission said,
