Sikh Diaspora objects as SGPC makes changes in NanakShahi Calendar

Heads of various Gurdwaras situated in the United States and Canada have expressed their resentment over the changes made in the NanakShahi Calendar, the only Sikh calendar, by Shiromani Gurdwara Parbhandhak committee (SGPC), the premier body of the Sikhs, in meet held at Fremont (San Francisco) on Sunday.


The meet lasted for three hours, during which the heads of various Sikh organizations expressed their objection to the changes made by SGPC recently in NanakShahi calendar.

Two trains rescheduled today

Two trains from Howrah have been rescheduled today due to late running of the corresponding down trains.

Amritsar Mail (3005 Up) scheduled to depart at 1910 hrs has been rescheduled at 2100 hrs, a release issued by Eastern Railways said.

Similarly, Mumbai Mail via Allahabad (2321 Up) will leave Howrah at 0030 hrs (midnight) on 13.01.2010 instead of 2200 hrs.

Amritsar remains cold at 2.2 Deg C

The cold wave continued unabated in Punjab
with minimum temperature staying low last night.

The Holi city of Amritsar remained the coldest place in the state with minimum temperature being recorded at 2.2 degrees Celsius. This was a marginal rise from 1.04 degrees recorded last night.

The minimum at Adampur dipped to 5.8 degrees while at Halwara near Ludhiana it hovered around 6.8 degrees.

However, in Bhatinda in the Malwa belt the minimum temperature plummeted to 3.4 degrees while in the border town of Pathankot it fell to 6.2 degrees.

Punjab Police seize 8kg heroin from a Nigerian national

Amritsar, Jan 8 : Punjab Police on Friday detained a Nigerian national with about 8 kilograms heroin worth 400 million rupees in the international market.

Acting on a tip-off, Punjab Police’s Special Operation Cell, detained international Heroin smuggler Felix Odemole resident of Nigeria near the Amritsar railways station.

Amritsar Senior Superintendent of Police P. K. Rai said: "State''s special operation cell has achieved a big success in which a Nigerian national named Felix have been nabbed with 8kilograms of heroin near the railway station.”

India accuses Pakistan of border rocket attacks

AMRITSAR: Indian frontier troops Saturday accused their Pakistani counterparts of firing at least four rockets across the border into northern Punjab but said there were no casualties.

The incident is the second since September when two rockets allegedly fired by Pakistani troops landed near the popular tourist attraction of Wagah in Indian Punjab.

Border Security Force (BSF) officials said two of the cross-border rockets exploded in farms on the Indian side while the remaining two did not detonate.

Despite a marginal rise in the minimum temperatures last night there was no respite from the piercing cold in Punjab.

Major parts of the state remained shrouded in a thick white blanket
of fog this morning, reducing visibility to a couple of yards. The low visibility affected road and rail traffic in the state.

The holy city of Amritsar remained the coldest place in the state with the minimum temperature hovering at 2.6 degrees celsius last night. The minimum at Adampur, near Jalandhar, rose by five degrees to register at 6.6 degrees celsius.

Cold waves in northern India claim 204 lives

The cold waves continue to disturb normal life across north India and the death toll due to the extreme harsh weather is now reported to be over 204.

All the nine fresh deaths were reported from Uttar Pradesh taking the death toll in the state to 40. Meerut recorded a temperature of 3.4 degree Celsius, the coldest in the state.

New Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Jan 4 : With temperatures dipping below normal and snowfall witnessed in the upper reaches of Himachal Pradesh and the Kashmir Valley, the normal routine of the people was disturbed for the third consecutive day and over 100 deaths were reported in Uttar Pradesh.

SGPC haste to amend NanakShahi calendar raises eyebrows

Amritsar, Jan 2(ANI): The Sikh Diaspora has raised eyebrows over the working of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbhandhak Committee (SGPC) regarding amendments made in the NanakShahi calendar without taking the community into confidence.
